“What does that even mean?” Jaimel whispered to themselves. They weren’t sure if it was a joke, a serious thing, or something people just said to confuse each other.
The next day at lunch, Jaimel decided to ask their friend, Sam. “Hey… um, can I ask you something?” Jaimel shuffled their tray nervously.
“Sure!” Sam grinned.
“What… what does ‘gay’ mean? People say it, but I don’t really get it.”
Sam thought for a moment. “Well, it means that someone likes people of the same gender. Like, a boy who likes boys, or a girl who likes girls. Some people are gay, some are straight, some are other things, too. It’s just who you feel love or crushes for.”
Jaimel blinked. “Oh… so it’s just… who you like?”
“Exactly,” Sam said. “It’s nothing to be scared of. Some people know right away, some people figure it out later. Everyone’s different.”
That afternoon, Jaimel sat quietly under a tree and thought about it. They realized they didn’t have all the answers about themselves yet, but that was okay. The important part was understanding that being gay—or any other way—is just one part of who someone is.
Jaimel smiled a little. Wondering wasn’t bad. Asking questions wasn’t bad. And maybe, someday, they’d understand themselves better too.
