Tomte: Maybe if it wasn't 7 with the eyes of a frog it would be an OKAY drawing.

Tomte: Here's the non manga version of the same picture, now this it's possible to say "fills my heart with joy and warmth. It is too beautiful."

Ocelot33: @Tomte: Tomte, most of times I can agree with your comments when they are objective and constructive, for example when they question the artist's real intention/mind behind the draw or the technique used.
However there are some other times in which I just read a resentful opinion, pointless cause it doesn't help the artist and tries many of times to just call attention.
If you want your analysis to be taken more seriously, you should make it sound like it's not based out of just reject to all that drawing style and make a more gentle approach to it, suggesting what could be improved next time instead of degrading it (you don't like japanese style, we get it, I sometimes get tired of it as well).
In this particular picture I find nothing wrong in the subject being "7 ys" cause it's not being sexualized in any way, it's elegant and dainty. The example you gave is a totally different style, comparing just the eyes it's taking off a single aspect of it.
Personally I think that modern style anime eyes look soulless, but that picture you sent didn't have any life in the eyes either)
This is not a flamewar comment so don't bother replying much to it, just take it in consideration.

Naomi: Well said Oce, though I also wanna add that even if some people find it distasteful, 'Japanese' style is just that, a STYLE. You're comparing this work to a completely different kind of brushwork when it doesn't even remotely seem to be attempting to look like it. It's cute in its own sense to the viewer who enjoys the anime art style. Nuff said

Tomte: I didn't pay any attention to either the landscape picture captainnisha made or this manga picture. I reacted to the compliments they received. I remember in high school I made a layout for something, I can't remember the specifics, back then I used to sarcastically comment on what I made as if, omg isn't this amazing, am I not smart or whatever. Because we all want to impress our teachers but not admit to it, or at least I wasn't too keen on admitting it. But I remember once when I did this the teacher wasn't too pleased, in fact she seemed a bit pissed off. She once took us to this art gallery of hers where she had taken pictures of men peeing, but that is not really relevant. Point is that I've found that unless what something someone has made actually is really good, it's not good to encourage them or say it's amazing. Always be critical until it's good, a good teacher is a person that gives the student attention, BAD attention. Constantely tells the student he or she is bad, that makes the student want to impress the teacher. I remember another instance, way back I posted some shitty thing on some forum, must have been around 14 years old, very proud of my little thing. 50 guys told me I sucked and that I should kill myself or whatever, it's what everyone needs to hear. I'm actually doing you a favor by telling you to improve on your...SHIT. ;)

Tomte: whatever they're trying to do.
•Is a person with great knowledge of what the student is trying to master, so the teacher can give good criticism and point out what's good about what the student has made and what's bad about it.
•The teacher should also be an admirable character, a person that the student wants to impress, that will be an extra burst of fuel for those late hours when you're feeling sick of working on whatever you're working on. An example would be our parents, we want to impress them and often go to great lengths to do so sometimes at the peril of our own sanity, a good teacher should also be a person we want to impress.

Now the anti teacher is a person who gives the student all the attention he or she wants but who isn't criticial of the person's work, who most of the time isn't even an admirable figure, who has no real knowledge of what the student is trying to master, who has no good source of inspiration to share with the student. I think what most of you don't realize is that you're not doing your friends here on the internet any favor by encouraging them to draw cartoons and mangas 24/7.

As I said in this instance I didn't really pay attention to the drawings as much as I did the praise they received, but if I would give the manga above some constructive criticism I would probably say that you should:

1. Cover the background in a greyish towards black value to get rid of all the white before hand. Currently the picture is a bit over exposed.
2. Look up the proportions of children online.
3. Look up the proportions of child faces online.
4. Study the skeleton or skull of young humans.
5. More clear folds on the dress, seems a bit sketchy atm.
6. Study light.

I reckon that in 3 years you'll be ready to receive great praise for your work if you follow my recommendations above.
You're welcome.

Tomte: The reason all of you are drawing on a site like this is because you're enjoying the attention, you like that others see you draw and you hope they think highly of your drawings. Now a teacher which people in our society pays tons of money to be teached by is a person who besides giving the student attention, which he/she enjoys, also:
•Is a person who inspires his/her students by showing them things they wouldn't be aware of it wouldn't be for the teacher showing them that thing. Inspiration is fuel, it's what makes it possible for a student to sit 6+ hours trying to improve upon whatever they're trying to do.
